A common creature of the Arctic tundra, the Arctic fox is a member of the Vulpes genus. It is well-adapted to living in cold, harsh environments and is perhaps best known for its acute hearing, which allows this fox to locate and catch prey moving under the snow.
History: It is estimated that there are hundreds of thousands of Arctic foxes roaming throughout their endemic habitats, classifying them as “least concern” on the conservation status spectrum. According to researchers, however, the Artic fox is slowly starting to feel the effects of global warming. Less snow cover on the ground has rendered their white coats to be less effective, making it harder for them to compete with red foxes, their larger cousins, for resources. Fortunately, action to preserve the ecological niche of the Arctic fox has been taken, and is mainly focused on driving the red fox out of the Arctic fox’s natural habitat.
